Madge Gill is undoubtedly one of the world's most highly regarded Outsider artists. She is represented in all of the international outsider public collections including the Collection de L'art Brut in Lausanne and the L'Aracine Collection at the Musee d'Art Moderne in Lille.
Presently an entire wall has been dedicated to her work at the new Museum of Everything in Primrose Hill, London.
Madge started creating mediumsitic drawings in 1919 after the death of her son and giving birth to a stillborn daughter which left her very ill for many months and resulted in the loss of an eye. Her work was created mostly at night in very dim light and under the guidance of her spirit guide, Myrninerest who Madge believed was the true owner of her work. This belief led Madge to refuse any offers to buy her work and upon her death in 1961 her vast output was found in cupboards and under her bed. Her son donated the majority to the Newham Heritage Collection where it still is today.
