This work is included in the Holloways of Banbury forthcoming sale: Pictures belonging to Julian Hartnoll on the 21st February 2012.
Painted at 42 Dartmouth Row, Greenwich.
The label on the reverse refers to the two scholarships Bratby received one from the Italian government in April 1954 of £200 and the other the Abbey Minor Scholarship of £230 for the Faculty of the Prix de Rome. Bratby shows the first signs his future proclivity for self-promotion by drawing attention to these awards.
Eric Estorick who purchased this painting was the founder of the Grosvenor Gallery and had an astute eye for the up and coming artist (he was later to handle F.N.Souza).
