The painting was initially called Meditation; there is no immediate explanation as to its change of title. The sitter was a young woman called Anne Butler who modelled for Bratby from December 1959 until April 1960 when, much to Bratby's annoyance, her fathe forbade her to continue. Nine canvases with her as the model appear in the Zwemmers show of 1960.
This work is included in the Holloways of Banbury forthcoming sale: Pictures belonging to Julian Hartnoll on the 21st February 2012.
